PUBLIC FRUIT TREES: A CASE-STUDY OF MONTREALURBAN FREE FOOD AND ITS ROLE FOR RESIDENTSAND STAKEHOLDERS

Urban fruit trees have recently garnered attention in the literature for their role in edible landscapes. Thus, this study delves into the overlooked world of public fruit trees in Montreal, investigating how they can enrich the city’s landscape and nourish its residents. Through a comprehensive mixed-method approach, including online surveys, focus group and semistructured interviews, it examines how citizens and stakeholders perceive and utilize these natural resources, shedding light on knowledge gaps and barriers to their full utilization. By gathering insights from a range of perspectives, including citizens and stakeholders, the research aims to propose practical solutions for maximizing the benefits of urban fruit trees.

Findings underscore the positive reception of these trees for their environmental and social contributions, as well as their potential to provide free food resources to the population. However, despite their promise, challenges such as limited awareness, knowledge, and logistical constraints hinder their full potential. The study strongly suggests providing more information regarding people’s rights to harvest. Moreover, the localization of these resources
and the choice of trees can impact people’s engagement and use. Through this research, valuable insights are offered to inform policy decisions and community-driven efforts aimed at enhancing fruit intake from Montreal’s urban environment.
