The design of a productive landscape Barcelona Tres Turons PArk, a case study

Urban parks can be the future green engines of a self-sufficient urban environment. They may become a productive landscape that merges nature, with a resource-efficient milieu, and a platform forecological awareness and education. This agro-ecosystem sustains space and the surrounded neighborhoods, with community supported gardening and urban farming, integrating the production of renewable energies, natural water purification and waste management. Tres Turons Park is a strategic green space in the northern part of the city of Barcelona, Spain. The Modification of the Metropolitan Master Plan, approved in January 2009, consolidates the space for an urban public park. This paperevaluates how to design a community self-organized productive landscape in Tres Turons Park, presenting the design methodology and analyzing the results of the workshop taken place at the Faculty of Architecture of Barcelona (UPC), on July 2009, with an international team of students, and professional guests.

Tags: aims to establish a dynamic, mesh-like connection with the world of urban agriculture and its many actors working in the area of spatial development. Comprised of academic and professional teams and individuals researching in the field, the core laboratory intentions concentrate on systematic investigations to discover, interpret, advance and develop ways in which the food cycles and urban development coalesce in the generative processes that impact urban life, city space, food production and all their overlaps and permutations.

The role of arboriculture in a healthy social ecology

In urban communities, arboriculture clearly contributes to the health of the biological ecosystem; does it contribute to the health of the social ecosystem as well? Evidence from studies in inner-city Chicago suggests so. In a 3 series of studies involving over 1,300 person-space observations, 400 interviews, housing authority records, and 2 years of police cnme reports, tree and grass cover were 3 systematically llnked to a wide range of social ecosystem indicators.

Urban forestry in a multicultural society

The increasingly multicultural character of modern urban society creates challenges and opportunities for the urban forester. For the urban forestry strategy to respond effectively to contemporary social issues, it must include policies and programs that promote social inclusion and the involvement of disadvantaged ethnic communities. This can be accomplished through a distinct community strategy. Although the fundamental principles of community involvement still apply, their application needs to reflect the multicultural diversity of the individual city or neighborhood. The education, consultation, and participation elements of the community strategy are delivered through a wide range of events and activities specifically designed to promote social inclusion and the engagement of ethnic communities.
